Samarkand is one of the popular cities in Uzbekistan and its weather reflects the warm, sharply continental and arid climate. The city receives an abundance of solar heat as is the case with most republics of Central Asia. The surface of the earth becomes considerably heated due to high radiation and the topsoil temperature in the vegetation-devoid plains frequently goes as high as 60 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in Samarkand ranges from - 6.9 to 30.55 degrees Celsius and climbs to 40 to 45 degrees Celsius at noontime in the summer months. The summer months range from end May to October and have stable dry weather.
The weather in Samarkand changes sharply from summer to winter. What starts as a fairly cold winter soon gives way to a warm rainy spring, followed by a dry summer. The first autumn frost comes at the end of October and the change from autumn to winter is abrupt, long and cloudless. The short winter months are characterised by fickle weather, and the frequent alternation of warm and cold air masses causes considerable fluctuation in temperature and air humidity. The skies become overcast, and it rains or snows occasionally. The spring starts at the end of February or early March and does not last for more than a month in the plains, but can last for more than three months in the mountains. Samarkand receives an average rainfall ranging from 0.0 to 234.0 mm a month, and in spring heavy rainfall and sharp temperature fluctuation is sometimes observed.
